European Union – The Publications Office has published the final publication to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of Nature Based Solutions.

The Handbook aims to provide a comprehensive framework for assessing the impacts of nature-friendly solutions and, in particular, an extensive set of indicators and methodologies for assessing the impacts of natural solutions in 12 areas of societal challenge:

  • Resistance to climate change
  • Water management
  • Natural and climatic hazards
  • Green space management
  • Biodiversity
  • Air quality
  • Regeneration of areas and places
  • Building knowledge and social capacity for sustainable urban transformation
  • Participatory planning and administration
  • Social justice and social cohesion
  • Health and well-being
  • New economic opportunities and green jobs.

The indicators were developed jointly within the European Working Group for Impact Assessment of the NBS with the aim of serving as a reference framework for relevant European Union policy and activities, targeting individual urban practices in the field of climate change adaptation towards nature-friendly solutions and enabling their evaluation at various levels. The listed indicators reflect the current state of scientific research into the impacts of nature-friendly solutions and standardized evaluation methods.
